One of the big pieces of advice that can be given to home business owners is to make sure that you don’t begin another business of hierarchy and varying levels. You didn’t like it when you were at your old job, so why begin that kind of system again. While a secretary and other help may be needed down the road, a business whose customers can interact with the boss directly appears to be more customer oriented, rather than money-driven. Find a way to make sure that there aren’t numerous steps to get to you. This might mean that you create an email system where customers can contact you and that you promise to respond within a certain time frame. In a traditional business, there are department and department heads, chairpersons and their secretaries, managers and supervisors. This can be very confusing to everyone involved in the business. One person can know something, but neglect to tell another and try to deal with it, but then deal with it poorly when talking about it may have solved it in the first place, etc. etc. It can make small problems into big problems very quickly and quite unnecessarily. If you are involved in a smaller home business, you may want to set aside a phone line or answering machine for customers to get a hold of you. Create a direct route from the customer to yourself. Marketing books will call this flat organization. This means that anyone can get to you directly instead of the red tape that is usually around a business owner or a level of management. If you have a partner, then you will need to have him or her act in the same manner. Not only does this show your customer commitment, but it also gives you the inside scoop on whatever is happening at all times. You are in complete control and knowledge of your business’ goings on. Of course, you will find that this is also overwhelming at times because you have to be everything to everyone and constantly inundate yourself with choices and decisions. However, would you rather know nothing or know everything? In your small business, it’s imperative that you know everything. It keeps everyone involved on the same page and should an errors or mistake arise, you’re able to deal with it in the full knowledge of what has happened. CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK (AGAIN) In order to create a successful home business, you may want to change your perception of what success is and what your success needs to be. A lot of home businesses start and stop because they didn’t grow fast enough or the work was too hard for the person to handle. But this could have been avoided with a little change in the perception. Let’s start off with how you should succeed. There is no definition or rule as to what it takes to succeed. It’s all up to you where you draw the line for success. So, if you’re making the line way up into the millions for your first month of business, you just might be setting yourself up for disaster. What you consider to be success might be better defined by the amount of interest that you’re generating with your product or service. You may also want to hope for bigger profits within six months rather than retiring. The small business can be very profitable, but it can also take time. You may not have the advantage of a large marketing budget or celebrity endorsements, so tone your idea of scale down a bit. Create a business plan that is do-able and appropriate given your similar competitors. Another thing to consider is that growth does take time. Large companies like Microsoft and Dell didn’t just pop up and make a fortune; they started with one product, innovated, then created something new, innovated, etc. You have to have patience in order to reap rewards. Realize that you do have a great idea, but it will take time to have everyone realize it. And it is hard work, there’s no getting around it. If you think that you can work a few hours a day, and then sit back and watch the money roll it—you are not ready for a home business. While there may be days like that, most of your days will be spent trying to figure out how to get customers or talking with the customers that you have, handling financial stuff, or just researching your field. There’s never a dull moment. The scale of your mind should be in relation to the business that you are trying to create. If there isn’t a big market for your product, then don’t create a mind that thinks there is. Change your mind about what your business should be and should do in order to be a ‘success.’ And set yourself up for gradual gains, rather than continuous mental losses. THE PEOPLE ARE RIGHT If you’re heard that the customer is always right, you’ve heard one of the basic truths to a home business. Although you may have a great idea and know how to sell anything, if you don’t have customer support, you don’t have anything. If it all begins with an idea, it all continues with your customer’s input. Since you have catered to your customers’ needs from the beginning, it only makes sense to continue the journey as the business grows and matures. Look at what your customers are buying and see if they might need something else to go along with their purchase. Perhaps there is an added bonus that you might be able to provide—batteries, lotion, catalog, savings card, etc. While this might seem like an obvious way to try to keep a customer, a customer appreciates it all the same. Who doesn’t like to get something for free? And if you’re stumped on something to add to your product or service, perhaps you can ask for suggestions from your consumer population. With each purchase, you can include a survey to be filled out. Ask if there is anything else they would like to see with your business. Give them a little incentive to fill out the card (a discount on their next purchase, for example) and see what kinds of replies you get. Most of the time, the customer is right on for what you can do to entice new customers and keep the old ones. They’re the ones that bought your product or service in the first place, so they’re all in the same buying market. You need to stay in touch with your customers to see if there is anything else that you can do to keep them buying your products or services. You can’t sit back and think that once you have created something, you’ll all done. Small businesses that thrive are the ones that constantly look for ways to improve and expand their product and service line. And even if it’s at your expense at first, these subtle changes will likely bring in more customers, so the extra cost is defrayed by the overall profit. Don’t be stingy when it comes to listening to your customers. You can’t give your product or service for free, but you can make it seem like a better deal because of an extra value item or additional service that they requested.
