While you can continue to improve your product and your service, you will also need to continue to improve yourself and your knowledge. What you’ve learned up to this point is good, but the world keeps changing and growing and you need to be ready to fill any new voids that come up in your business. Keeping up to date with your market’s current trends is the best way to spot opportunities and ideas for innovating and changing your business. You have to spot the ripples in the pond before anyone else does. You can do this in two different angles: looking at your market and looking at your customer. Your market can be a valuable resource because it is a living breathing testament to your business choices and decisions. While you may not notice changes at first, your continual observance of your competitors and rivals will help you grow on your own. A lot of home business owner will attend local business meetings or groups in order to see what is going on with modern business trends. While these may not be geared to your business specifically, you may find other ideas that you can adapt to your specific needs. Trade magazines and journals are the best resources for a small business as they are written for your specific needs and are looking for the changes themselves. However, spotting these changes on your own is more advantageous. Looking at your customer for knowledge should come as no surprise. Your customer understands what the product or service means to them and why it would still be beneficial over time. Maybe the needs change and you can adapt to suit that, but if you don’t take the time to research and listen to your customers, you will never know. Your initial business idea may have to change as the technology or the lifestyle figures change. This is an inevitability of business and growth. In order to make things better, you have to learn about why they worked in the first place. Never stop learning about your business and how you could improve it. The best ideas are the ones that adapt over time, not the ones that remain stagnant. You have to actively search out information that could be useful for your business. Be a sponge that soaks up any little piece of the growth puzzle and you’re sure to be steps ahead of your competitors. LEADING YOURSELF While motivational speakers and gurus can talk about getting yourself ready to lead employees into the battle of the workplace, what can you do for yourself? You’ll need to start off with a clear vision as to where you want to end up. Perhaps you have a monetary goal or a personal goal for sales. Find out why you are doing what you are doing and seek to truly understand your motivation. Are you looking to give your family a better life or perhaps to sell a new product? Why are you reading right now about starting your own home business? Get a vision for yourself and for your business. One of the many benefits of having your own business is that customers and any employees will be able to see the emotions that you have to back you up. You aren’t hidden behind layers of management or boards of trustees; you are the heart and the soul of the operation. You are the driving force behind your success and it will be apparent to your audience. Make your heart apparent to your audience. This isn’t the time to be ‘cool’ and reserved. You have something that you’re excited about, so why not tell everyone that you can? Show everyone why they need to be excited and you’re sure to generate genuine interest. Find the part of your business that will truly help people. It can be something as simple as making their mornings easier with a kitchen tool or helping to clean the house on the weekends. Find something that people have troubles with and empower them to want to do better for themselves. Find what really irks your customer and give THEM the tools to solve the problem. This isn’t about money or about you; it’s about their needs, right? By giving the power to your customer, you are showing that you are interested in making their lives better, happier, less stressful, etc. And that should be the overall vision anyways. And by leading yourself with integrity, emotion, and heart, you’ll be showing yourself the way to true success for your business. And because of your effort, you’ll attract business and sales and all the things that you want in your life. Become your own leader, your own motivator, your own guru, and show your potential clients and customers that you can help them too. LOOKING FOR CHANGE Your home business is going to become your lifestyle and vice versa. Unlike the hum-drum ways of corporate life, it is also going to constantly change and ask you to change. Are you ready for this? A lot of people think that change is a bad thing, a negative thing, but it is actually the mechanism for creating new things, new ideas, and new ways of doing anything and everything. Change creates a condition in which the old can not remain. You changed when you decided to start this business venture and you’ll continue to change as the days go on. You have to learn a new way of embracing change rather than condemning it. And once you’ve done that, you’ll even begin to start seeing change not as a difference, but just another way of doing what you were already doing. Let’s get more specific. Change is something that is unexpected for most people which is why it’s so hard to handle at times. Why don’t we expect things to change? One theory is that change denotes a sense that our idea wasn’t good enough to begin with. Let’s think of the first computer. It was a good idea, but it needed to change from the room filling monstrosity that it was into something that anyone could use so that it could become more profitable. Again, great idea, but it changed. Another example, the cellular phone started off as something that only sat in the car when you needed it. And now? Everyone has one because they’ve become a portable way to keep connected with others. In order to look at change favorably and learn to thrive on it, you need to understand that stagnation does help a business—it hinders it. While your competitors are innovating and changing, you’re going to get left behind. Think of change as a way to become better, rather than a condemnation of something you’ve already done. It’s really an opportunity to create a larger customer base and more prospects for more products and services. You might go in a completely different direction, but it will far better because you embraced the possibility instead of being a stick in the mud. One of the best ways to learn to thrive on change is to seek it out. Constantly look at your business as a lump of clay that can be reshaped. What ELSE can you do in order to be the best? Thrive on the possibility that you can only get better! |
