You may be laughing to see this title because you’re already exhausted from trying to plan and run your home business. That’s understandable, but if you collapse from exhaustion, you won’t make any profits. How do you reconcile this? For starters, you want to start off your business in the best health that you can. Since you can’t call in sick to your boss, your health now will predict how you will hold up under stress. You need to nourish your body first and foremost. This is not the time to eat anything that you can get your hands on. Find ways to keep healthy foods around and keep you out of the fridge whenever you feel the urge to procrastinate or snack. It may be helpful for you to keep a small refrigerator in your office in order to keep the business space and keep you from wandering around. Make sure that you have vegetables to snack on or granola bars. Bottled water and sugarless drinks are good too. For maintaining your energy, you can also snack on nuts and crackers. Try to eat every few hours and drink water too. This will keep your blood sugar from plummeting and leaving you without any energy. You will also want to schedule yourself times for exercise. You don’t have to lift heavy weights or go for a run, but try to give yourself time to get up and stretch, walk around—if only for a few minutes each hour. This keeps you alert and your energy up. However, you will want to fit in some aerobic exercise during your off time in order to get that immune system working well. Yoga and stretching during your breaks can help you from getting too stiff. Some weight training is also good because it will help you keep the muscle tone in your back while you’re spending long hours on the computer. Too many stiff necks have been caused by a lack of activity. Don’t let that be you. You will also want to make sure that you are sleeping well each night. Even if your mind is racing, you need to stick to a regular sleep schedule in order to keep your body in the top condition it can be. Pick a time to go to bed and wake up by. You should be getting at least six hours of sleep a night on a regular basis. Sleeping in doesn’t help. Your body is your only employee and your only vehicle for getting you to your goals and dreams. Treat it well so that you can enjoy the spoils of your hard work. KIDS AND YOUR OFFICE If you start a home business because you think that you will be able to save on daycare, think again. It has been said that parenting is a full time job by itself, so if you add a business on top of that, one of them is going to suffer. And you don’t want that to happen. What you may want to consider for your family when starting a business is to run things as though you weren’t home at all. This might mean sticking with daycare of a babysitter while you’re is your work hours. Of course, this seems like an unnecessary expense, but when you figure it all out, it’s not. In order to look professional, you need to show that work is the only thing that you do when you’re in your office. Imagine answering the phone with a screaming child in the background. Do you think your client is really going to believe that you’re devoting all of your time and energy to them? The answer is that they will think you aren’t committed to their needs. Likewise, you need to be able to leave the office and meet with clients in some cases. How are you going to do that when you have a child at home? You can’t leave them there by them selves. You may be able to compromise on this issue and hire a babysitter in your house at a reduced rate, but knowing that your child is around may be distracting enough. You also want to set up a plan for when the children are home from school or work. There needs to be a set of rules for your work time in order for everyone to remain calm and happy. Treat your work space like you would your old office. The lines between family and work will be blurred in the beginnings of your home business. You family is accustomed to seeing you when you are home and getting to talk with you. There may be a transition period in which your children don’t understand and will try everything in their power to get your attention, but this will pass. Sit them down and explain to them that you are working like you used to outside of the house. Try to schedule times where the family can be together in order to interact in a non-work environment. It will help everyone. |
